FrameMaker represents a tremendous advance over earlier preceding DTP stalwarts such as PageMaker and QuarkXPress. You won't be able to tell the difference between FrameMaker and other DTP software from looking at printed documents, but we assure you that they are very different inside. DTP software up until FrameMaker has tended to focus on generating beautiful layouts and printed results. FrameMaker, however, attaches importance to the actual data, enabling it to be prepared in a form that will be easy to re-use in various ways. In short, FrameMaker treats printing as just one of many uses for the original data, rather than as its sole objective. It is this difference in approach that sets FrameMaker apart from its predecessors.
Improved translation efficiency Using FrameMaker in combination with TRADOS(C) translation memory software can for example boost translation efficiency considerably. Maintaining consistency of terminology and word usage is more easily accomplished, leading to reductions in translation time, and accordingly costs. (About TRADOS(C)) Ease of data conversion FrameMaker enables the easy conversion of data into HTML (standard Website data format) and PDF formats. This is also possible with data created using earlier DTP software, but certain information tends to get lost in the process, distorting layouts and necessitating revisions. With data generated by FrameMaker, such inconveniences are rare, making for much smoother data conversion. Moreover, changes made to data originally created with FrameMaker appear highlighted on screen for easy identification, and are tracked to facilitate data management. FrameMaker boasts many other convenient features in addition to the above, and while it is still relatively little used in Japan, we foresee the day when it will become the standard software here too for rendering and communicating technical and other data.
