Thinking About the World

Few of us could just sit by while next-door neighbors starve to death, but at the same time, there are not that many people in Japan who spare a thought for the millions of people throughout the world who daily face death and despair from famine or illness.

It was images from the civil war in Somalia that first made me sit up and take notice, at a time when I was devoting my waking hours to money games as a bank employee. I have resolved to keep those images fresh in my mind, and to make myself useful in whatever way I can.

Japan is a rich country, and it is my prayer that everyone here who showed such selfless compassion for the victims of the Kobe Earthquake will in time come to show the same compassion for those less fortunate than themselves throughout the world.
